The next big thing: UrbanSeeder.com

I’ve already mentioned it in the post scriptum of my LIFT07-report that UrbanSeeder a very cool thing, actually one of the coolest start-ups I’ve discovered so far this year. Actually I wanted to write about the service in more detail, but I promised Maya that I wouldn’t. But now that Robert put up this video, I guess I can talk again. Please notice the guy with the yellow t-shirt in the background sneaking a peak. That would be me :-)

I believe this service will be very successful, I just feel it. If you want to stay up to date, I would subscribe to the newsletter.

Good luck, Maya!

Dear Booth-builders, did I say you should call me?

There is something that is bugging me the last couple of days. To be honest it’s a pain in the ass.

It’s the first time I’m going to be an exhibitor on a trade show (Orbit iEX with trigami). And now I get calls from annoying booth-builders almost every day.

If you’re a booth-builder, please keep in mind:
#1: I didn’t say you should call me!
#2: We’re a start-up and have no money!
#3: We’re part of the eStarter park and have an ALL INCLUSIVE fair-booth, so we don’t need you!
#4: If we need help, we ASK for help! So stop calling us!

PS: Excuse my grumbling, but I’m just really pissed! A few more phone calls and they all risk to be blacklisted publicly here on my blog.

I’m going to be a Fonero

I know about FON for quite some time now, and I always wanted to share my WiFi and get some free WiFi in return. But somehow I just never got a FON-router.

I was just browsing through XING premium world and I discovered the free FON-router offering. So I spent some minutes (and some extra minutes due to a sucky registration form which didn’t want to accept my street for five times, because of an error named "You must enter a valid address number") to get a free La Fonera.

I’m curious if it’s as easy as FON promises and if the sunrise terms of service allow such usage (I haven’t read them and I’m not going to).

PS: The XING-offering is limited to 2000 pieces. So if you’re a XING premium member, I’d get this free router better sooner than later ;-).

Update:
I got a request how I resolved the "You must enter a valid address number" problem and I want to answer it in public: I just tried different kinds of address combinations and different addresses. One time the street name with house number, one time street name without house number, one time street name plus additional street information (just fill something in) etc. When I remember correctly the time it worked I filled out every input field, i.e. street name plus house number, additional street information, the house number separately, the floor etc. Remember: You can enter every rubbish, because you can edit the information (especially the shipping and invoice addresses) later on in the cart. Have fun!

To be officially clear about it: That sucks! So if a FON-techie or other FON-guy reads this: Please fix the form or get the form fixed!

Lift07: The impact on me and this blog

I arrived on thursday in the middle of a session. My first impression was: Wow, those are an awful lot of laptops!

So I turned on mine and the party started :-).

My learnings during Lift07:

#1: No conference again without my laptop! Although a computer disturbes your attention (at least it disturbs mine), it’s worth having one with you, but only if you use it right. If you just want to work (i.e. writing unrelated emails etc.), you probably better stay in your office (since its cheaper and you don’t have to come to Geneva). But if you use Technorati, Google, XING, Wikipedia and all kinds of other resources during a presentation, it can really enrich your experience (at least it enriched mine). Self-discipline is king!

#2: I don’t want to blog like crazy! I’m no writer, no journalist and blogging is not my profession. So I see no point in blogging like crazy. Don’t get me wrong. It’s really impressing to sit in the same session next to Robert, Stephanie, Bruno and others and watching my RSS-reader explode on the topics I’m JUST HEARING nearly in realtime :-). But that’s not what I want to do. Even if I wanted to (and sometimes I REALLY wanted), I can’t blog about everything. I have to focus. I have to prioritize. I have to deal with information overload. In the past, sometimes I blogged out of pressure (because I thought I HAD to keep up with my desired frequency); but in the future, I won’t. I just had to realize that it’s impossible to keep up with everything. The world is imperfect. I am imperfect. This blog is imperfect. I will focus. I will prioritize.

#3: The world speaks English! You can accept it or not, but the world speaks English. Lift07 spoke English. Geneva speaks English. This blog will speak English. I just feel that this is the way it has to be. The world is flat, the world is global, the world speaks English.

#4: Geneva speaks French! I had to realize that my French sucks. Although I have very strong feelings about English, I think its really important so speak local languages as well. So whether I like it or not: I have to refresh my French, and I have to refresh my Czech. Its always a plus being able to speak to local people in their local language.

#5: Swiss trains are imperfect! For the first time in my life I experienced a technical problem on a Swiss train (the engine broke, or something). We had to stop 2 times and I arrived 30 minutes late to Lift07.

#6: I’m going to reboot! Almost everybody I spoke to at Lift07 has been to reboot before. I spoke to the organizers at a bar. The next reboot will be next May.

#7: More Americans than Germans! It was really impressive that more Americans than Germans came to Lift07. There were also 6 guys from Canada, 2 guys from Brazil, 4 guys from Korea (!) and somebody from Israel. Wow, what a mix!

#8: CERN rocks! Although I live in Switzerland I actually had no idea what the CERN was all about (except that the WWW was born there). The presentation of Brian Cox was a highlight of Lift07. Especially the DataGrid Project (one of the largest global computer grids) is really interesting. Afterwards I spoke to Brian and he told me that the world could only afford one CERN and that there is no (serious) competition for CERN on the planet. And that the new CERN-projects are funded from countries all over the world (not only European countries).

#9: Humanistic projects rock! I was really impressed by projects like The hole in the Wall (introducing computers to developing countries) or Aresa (developing a plant that changes color on landmines). The lesson: It’s not (only) about money, but about changing the world and making the world a better place.

#10: Face2Face matters! The fact that Lift07 was no virtual conference shows one more time that face2face still matters. Of course its a good thing to reduce transaction costs with solutions like Halo ($500.000+), but its still more fun to have a real fondue than one over Halo ;-).

PS: Special greetings to Alfonso (thanks for bringing me to Lift07), Maya (really cool startup), Matthias (was really nice to finally meet you in person) and all the others I met.

Lift07: Speech of Bernino Lind

The speech of Bernino Lind was one of the most creative speeches during LIFT07.

Here is an interview with this interesting and polarizing entrepreneur, including a short sequence of his speech (the sequence is starting here):

(the full speech should be online soon)

Actually the two guys in this sequence are no others than Alfonso (left) and me :-).

By the way, Bernino now lives in Geneva, so I hope his new ventures will be Made in Switzerland :-).

Drinking Beer with Robert Scoble

As I mentioned before, I really like spontaneous events. So tonight I went drinking beer with Maryam and Robert Scoble and a bunch of German bloggers and webworkers (Sebastian, Rolf, Carolin and Christian) and family members (Robert’s aunt).

That was fun.

(note to myself: I am a lousy photographer)

After a couple of pitchers Sebastian broke the ice and asked Robert to sign his book. I couldn’t resist to this peer pressure and had to get an autograph myself:

("REMO, Thanks for meeting us in Freiburg! Good luck with your business & hope you enjoy this!")

(Pssst, don’t tell Robert that I haven’t read the book yet… I just read the first chapter on the way there… I haven’t even finished the Long Tail, The World is Flat, Tipping Point, Wisdom of the Crowds… heeeeeelp… I’m suffering from information overload!!!!!)

I even did little video with Robert for this blog:

[flash]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IpFDGoFf6A[/flash]

Obviously, he’s suggesting attending the LIFT conference, a conference he considers in the following years becoming one of the best Web/Tech-Conferences on the planet. Presumably I’ll be there, too.

And finally I could capture Robert at work, being a director. I love the dog scene and of course the shushing signals ;-)

[flash]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GySqPiiLiQk[/flash]

@Robert:
I hope to meet you in Geneva. Maybe next time I can get the URL-thing right ;-). For the record: It was trigami.com and we’re doing something like PayPerPost in Europe. My pitch was definetely the lousiest one I ever did. I hope you don’t cut it out of your video, ’cause it’ll be definitely fun to watch ;-).

@Others:
Hope to see you soon. Don’t forget the Webmondays in Freiburg and don’t forget the Silicon Rhalley (aka Silicon Rheintal).

To cut the crap:
I enjoyed it!

(PS: Thanks to YouTube I had to wait over 45 min to let this two little videos process. That pretty much sucks. And it doesn’t even work properly yet. So if you can’t see the videos, don’t blame me, blame YouTube – and come back in a couple of hours)

Update:
Here’s Roberts report

Some other learnings of yesterday’s meeting
#1: Robert uses Google Reader as his main RSS-Reader (and subscribed 500+ RSS-Feeds)
#2: Robert loves Techmeme
#3: Robert recently bought a Mac ;-)
