I am a Fonero now

I’ve just installed my La Fonera FON WiFi router.

The installation was surprisingly simple:
#1: Connect FON-router with power
#2: Connect FON-router with ADSL router
#3: Register the FON-router at wifi.fon.com
#4: Configurate your FON-router at fon.com (set maximum bandwith you want to share [minimum is 512Kb], change name of WiFi-signal, change the WPA-password etc.)

Now I can use the worldwide FON-network. Whereever I find a FON-Hotspot, I log in with my username and password and I’m online for free :-).

There was one downside about the Quick Installation Guide: No single word about security regarding private networks. I just assume it’s secure, but I have no clue about the details. At least one sentence such as "You don’t have to worry about your private networks. No one can access your private data or your shared folders" would be appropriate.

you have two fon signals being sent by your router:

MyPlace, which is wpa secured and only you (and people you give the password to) can access. with wpa password, no need for fon user_id and pass.

FON_AP, which is not secured at all, where anybody can get an IP and sniff packets, but you have to have to have a fon user_id in order to access the internet. this is the network that people outside your household will access.

so that makes sure that when you are at your place, nobody can access your private stuff, because you communicate over your wpa-encryptet protocoll.

then again, anybody who does NOT have the wpa key, has a totally insecure connection and anybody can see all the packets being sent/received.

so make sure you use Myplace when surfing – and yeah enjoy FON!

Thanks Flavio. That’s exactly what I assumed.

Am I right to be concerned about fon.com?…

For the uninitiated, Fon.com is “the largest wifi community in the world”. You let others share your wifi, they let you share theirs, a pretty good idea for people visiting other towns and cities (assuming there’s coverage). They even…
