Felix Petersen presents Plazes.com

Felix Petersen is a founder of Plazes, a Zurich/Berlin based company which provides geo-location services. Felix agreed that I record his presentation at Red Herring 100 in Cannes:

Plazes has raised €2.7 mio early this year and is growing very fast. A cool thing about Plazes is that they want to digitize walk-in customers in offline settings and create what Felix calls the "PageRank of the real world". E.g. you can see how many people went to a certain restaurant or checked-in in a certain hotel. This opens cool opportunities for behaviorial targeting or related stuff.

Sugih Jamin presents Zattoo.com

Prof. Dr. Sugih Jamin is co-founder and CTO of the Swiss/American startup Zattoo, which offers free live-television via Internet. He agreed that I record his Red Herring 100 presentation in Cannes:

Link: sevenload.com

I had lunch with Sugih and learned several things:
- Zattoo launched in Switzerland because of the cheap licencing costs and the good coverage of the major Swiss TV-stations
- Zattoo has over 250’000 users only in Switzerland
- Zattoo started as a students-project of one of Jamin’s students
- Development is based in the US; business/marketing is based in Zurich
- The synchronization issues should be fixed soon (the cause of the problem was that Zattoo stopped using QuickTime for synchronization due to realiability issues)
- Zattoo will generate revenue with advertising that is displayed when a new channel is buffering (that takes about 5 seconds)

“The web is underhyped” (David Weinberger)

http://www.elektrischer-reporter.de/flvplayer.swf?file=http://elektrische-bewegtbilder.de/elrep/19/El_Rep_19.flv

"I continue to think that the web is underhyped (…) there is now a second round of enthusiasm in the internet as a business opportunity (…) there always will be bubbles and opportunies that come and go (…) but the basics of it is a human social dynamic and that’s (…) stady"

I like this pragmatic view of the (Internet-) world :-).

"We’re not overwhelmed by information (…) the cure for information overload is more information [i.e. meta-data & managing-tools]"

Well, I disagree with the first part (at least I feel overwhelmed sometimes), but the second part of the sentence is so true. Meta-data and good managing-tools will be key (as focusing, as prioritizing, as just letting go… you just can’t keep up with everything, as you just cannot read all books that possibly interest you in just a lifetime)

(source: Interview with David Weinberger, co-author of the Cluetrain manifesto)

PS: This video inspired me to finally print out the 95 theses of the Cluetrain manifesto (PDF), because I have never read them. And to be honest, I have not heard of Cluetrain before December 2006 :-).

Panel of Web Community Founders

An interesting panel with young web community founders moderated by Guy Kawasaki:

[flash]http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3962105514239495106[/flash]

Panel participants:
Sean Suhl of Suicide Girls
Akash Garg of hi5
Drew Curtis of Fark
Markus Frind of PlentyofFish
Max Levchin of Slide
James Hong of HotorNot

Learnings:
#1: Do what you’re passionate about and have fun!
#2: Never surrender! But don’t forget to face reality.
#3: Forget MBA schools and all the case studies. Just get going and go for it!
#4: The team is important. Hire the right people. Hire evangelists. Hire customers!
#5: Drew Curtis (Fark) is a funny guy and definitely a good choice for a panel :-)
#6: Do intelligent marketing. Don’t throw money out the window for ineffective things! But don’t base your future on luck and coincidence. I’m convinced that marketing is still very important for every company.
#7: None of the participants have raised venture capital. Remember: The venture model is not the only model in the world!

The next big thing: UrbanSeeder.com

I’ve already mentioned it in the post scriptum of my LIFT07-report that UrbanSeeder a very cool thing, actually one of the coolest start-ups I’ve discovered so far this year. Actually I wanted to write about the service in more detail, but I promised Maya that I wouldn’t. But now that Robert put up this video, I guess I can talk again. Please notice the guy with the yellow t-shirt in the background sneaking a peak. That would be me :-)
http://www.podtech.net/player/podtech-player.swf?bc=3F34K2L1

I believe this service will be very successful, I just feel it. If you want to stay up to date, I would subscribe to the newsletter.

Good luck, Maya!

Lift07: Speech of Bernino Lind

The speech of Bernino Lind was one of the most creative speeches during LIFT07.

Here is an interview with this interesting and polarizing entrepreneur, including a short sequence of his speech (the sequence is starting here):

[flash]http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5600740743137014697[/flash]

(the full speech should be online soon)

Actually the two guys in this sequence are no others than Alfonso (left) and me :-).

By the way, Bernino now lives in Geneva, so I hope his new ventures will be Made in Switzerland :-).

Drinking Beer with Robert Scoble

As I mentioned before, I really like spontaneous events. So tonight I went drinking beer with Maryam and Robert Scoble and a bunch of German bloggers and webworkers (Sebastian, Rolf, Carolin and Christian) and family members (Robert’s aunt).

That was fun.

(note to myself: I am a lousy photographer)

After a couple of pitchers Sebastian broke the ice and asked Robert to sign his book. I couldn’t resist to this peer pressure and had to get an autograph myself:

("REMO, Thanks for meeting us in Freiburg! Good luck with your business & hope you enjoy this!")

(Pssst, don’t tell Robert that I haven’t read the book yet… I just read the first chapter on the way there… I haven’t even finished the Long Tail, The World is Flat, Tipping Point, Wisdom of the Crowds… heeeeeelp… I’m suffering from information overload!!!!!)

I even did little video with Robert for this blog:

[flash]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IpFDGoFf6A[/flash]

Obviously, he’s suggesting attending the LIFT conference, a conference he considers in the following years becoming one of the best Web/Tech-Conferences on the planet. Presumably I’ll be there, too.

And finally I could capture Robert at work, being a director. I love the dog scene and of course the shushing signals ;-)

[flash]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GySqPiiLiQk[/flash]

@Robert:
I hope to meet you in Geneva. Maybe next time I can get the URL-thing right ;-). For the record: It was trigami.com and we’re doing something like PayPerPost in Europe. My pitch was definetely the lousiest one I ever did. I hope you don’t cut it out of your video, ’cause it’ll be definitely fun to watch ;-).

@Others:
Hope to see you soon. Don’t forget the Webmondays in Freiburg and don’t forget the Silicon Rhalley (aka Silicon Rheintal).

To cut the crap:
I enjoyed it!

(PS: Thanks to YouTube I had to wait over 45 min to let this two little videos process. That pretty much sucks. And it doesn’t even work properly yet. So if you can’t see the videos, don’t blame me, blame YouTube – and come back in a couple of hours)

Update:
Here’s Roberts report

Some other learnings of yesterday’s meeting
#1: Robert uses Google Reader as his main RSS-Reader (and subscribed 500+ RSS-Feeds)
#2: Robert loves Techmeme
#3: Robert recently bought a Mac ;-)
